We have been huge fans of Doorposts materials since our oldest was a toddler, but I was not familiar with As Unto the Lord until about a year ago. I picked it up off of a table at a homeschool convention and thumbed through it. I was struck by so much conviction in just those few pages that my flesh immediately rebelled - I put the book right back down and began walking away!! As I walked, I realized that if I was that convicted by a book, then I probably needed it. I turned around, bought the book, and have never regretted it. In fact, the biggest delay we have had in getting it up on our website is that we keep giving away all of our copies!
As Unto the Lord is, hands-down, the best book that any wife of any age could ever read. It has several parts:
1. A set of topics and questions which are designed for personal reflection and self-examination. "Prayer for my Husband: Have I earnestly prayed for my husband today?", "Cursing: Have I thought or spoken a wish of evil against my husband today?", "Defense and Maintenance of my Husband's Person and Authority: Have I supported and built up my husband as the authority of our home?" and so on. These are only questions - there are no answers or commentary.
2. Each question has a page number next to it. As I read through the questions, if I realize that I am falling short in a particular area, then I turn to the corresponding page. For each topic/question, there are several pages of more detailed, specific questions, which are again worded in such a way as to be self-directed. Each question is followed by several Bible verses. There is no human commentary of any kind in response to the questions, just the pure Word of the Lord.
3. An interesting, readable, and practical article about ways to use the book. The article is broken down into various types of wives such as the discontented wife, the discouraged wife, the average wife, etc., with specific suggestions given for each. There is also information about using this book in a lady's Bible study, in counseling situations, and for using this book to train your daughters.
4. The last portion contains numerous projects for wives and/or moms and daughters. These are primarily topical Bible study projects which would be the wonderful basis for a notebook. These projects could be done in a group, by yourself, with your daughter, etc.
I have read many books about marriage and wifehood. Some were better than others. Even the best, most reasonable and godly suggestions cannot, however, compare with the undiluted Word of God. I cannot argue with this book (even if I DID try to walk away from it LOL). I cannot find "wiggle room" or tell myself that the author and I simply do not agree on some issues. I have no fear of being deceived or led astray here. Instead, I can confidently turn to this volume again and again and know that I am being set straight in the truest sense. One of the best things I have learned is how serving and submitting to my husband is really all about serving and submitting to the Lord.
I will warn you that this book will most certainly convict you. I have said "ouch" to so many things in this book that I have often jokingly told Jeff that there should be a package of band-aids taped inside the cover. In all seriousness, though, there is no condemnation here. My shortcomings as a wife and as a person were paid for long ago on the cross! I rejoice as I come to the Word and ask God to continue to transform me into the image of His Son.
