We are so excited to be able to offer the new Basic Phonics Skills Series from Evan Moor. This series of 4 reproducible books and 4 books of ready-to-make phonics games covers preschool (pre-reading) through comfortable reading at about a 3rd grade level. The material can be used at whatever pace suits you and your child. This is not a phonics curriculum in the sense that it does not tell you what to do each day. Instead, each of the reproducible books and each of the Phonics Centers books provide basic phonics instruction that grows increasingly challenging. You simply need to find the correct level for your child and work at a pace that is comfortable for your child. If you are confident in your ability to teach reading, you could use these materials as your primary phonics program. If you prefer to use a standard phonics curriculum, these books will serve as a treasure trove of fun practice work and reinforcement. I often find myself needing to provide my younger children with some independent work that will keep them occupied while I work with a sibling. This material is ideal for that purpose - it is not busy work, and it is presented in an engaging and interesting manner. The clear indexes allow me to pull out a few pages that correspond to material that we are studying in phonics. I can give that work to a child and know that he is reviewing valuable skills while he waits for me!
Basic Phonics Skills Level A
This is the first book in the Basic Phonics Skills Series. To view this entire book page-by-page, please click here.
This book includes:
**32 pages of reproducible print awareness activities, such as identifying items that are the same or different, identifying which item is first, last, etc., hidden pictures, and so forth. These types of activities prepare children to recognize key characteristics of our printed language.
**Over 60 pages of reproducible phonemic awareness activities, such as counting syllables and working with rhymes. These types of activities prepare children for hearing the phonics components of our language.
**2 pages per letter of basic writing practice. This is not meant to be a handwriting program, but these pages do allow little ones to explore tracing and writing letters. Each letter has one page in traditional manuscript and an identical page with "modern" manuscript (similar to italic).
**3 pages per letter of sound-symbol practice - in other words, matching pictures to the letter with the correct sound. Each letter has a page for coloring the words that start with the target sound, a page for cutting out and gluing down pictures that begin with the target sound, and a "hidden picture" type of activity for the child to find the words that begin with the target sound. The emphasis here is not on letter recognition, but on sound recognition. Instead of asking the child to find pictures of words that start with "b," they are asked to find pictures of words that start like "bat."
**An adorable mini-book for each letter of the alphabet. These are meant to be copied, colored, and stapled into little booklets. Each little booklet is 4 pages long, and many of them also cover basic color identification skills, counting skills, etc.
**Teaching tips and a student progress tracking form.
Because this entire book is reproducible, it is a great value. My 4 year old is developing a real interest in writing letters, and he is thrilled when I copy some of the pages for him to "work" on. He doesn't need any formal phonics yet, but this is great foundational material! Basic Phonics Skills A is targeted for Pre-K and K. It is appropriate for any child who needs the prereading skills listed in the book description above. If your child needs more challenging material, please look at volume B, C, or D. For more fun and reinforcement, pair this book with Phonics Centers A, shown below in the related products section.
