We are so excited to be able to offer the new Basic Phonics Skills Series from Evan Moor. This series of 4 reproducible books and 4 books of ready-to-make phonics games covers preschool (re-reading) through comfortable reading at about a 3rd grade level. The material can be used at whatever pace suits you and your child. This is not a phonics curriculum in the sense that it does not tell you what to do each day. Instead, each of the reproducible books and each of the Phonics Centers books provide basic phonics instruction that grows increasingly challenging. You simply need to find the correct level for your child and work at a pace that is comfortable for your child. If you are confident in your ability to teach reading, you could use these materials as your primary phonics program. If you prefer to use a standard phonics curriculum, these books will serve as a treasure trove of fun practice work and reinforcement. I often find myself needing to provide my younger children with some independent work that will keep them occupied while I work with a sibling. This material is ideal for that purpose - it is not busy work, and it is presented in an engaging and interesting manner. The clear indexes allow me to pull out a few pages that correspond to material that we are studying in phonics. I can give that work to a child and know that he is reviewing valuable skills while he waits for me!
Basic Phonics Skills Level C
This is the third book in the Basic Phonics Skills Series. To view this entire book page-by-page, please click here.
This book includes:
**27 pages of short and long vowel word activities. This is the book that introduces long vowel (4 letter) words.
**10 activity sheets teaching hard and soft "c" and "g" sounds. (Hard "c" is heard in "cat," soft "c" is heard in "circle.")
**A 7 page introduction to the sh, th, wh, and ch sounds.
**An 8 page introduction to r-controlled vowels like "ir" and "ar."
**45 pages of work in long vowel blends like "oa" in "coat," "oo" sounds, and "y" as a vowel. There is an emphasis on selecting the correct spelling of each sound.
**68 pages of beginning and ending consonant blends. These are explored pretty thoroughly.
**6 pages of activities for plurals and -ed and -ing endings. These are a little more advanced than the activities in Volume B and include words ending in "y" and silent "e."
**5 Activity pages dealing with counting syllables.
**27 word family activities including puzzles, cutting and gluing, and word family "sliders" or "machines." These are papers that have a word family ending, such as "ight" written on them. Two slits are cut in the paper and a strip of paper printed with consonants is run through the slit - for example, using the "ight" family, the strip might have an "s" to make "sight," an "n" to make "night" etc. As the strip of paper is run through the slider, the children read the words. Kids love these!!
**20 adorable mini-books for the students to color and read. They are indexed according to the phonetic skill that is being emphasized. These books are interesting and motivating to read. The back cover of each book contains lists of words that follow the phonics rule being reviewed.
**Teaching tips, phonics rules, review pages, spelling rules, and a student progress tracking form.
Because this entire book is reproducible, it is a great value. This volume is best for children who are comfortable reading 3 letter words and are ready to move on to long vowels and consonant blends It is targeted to grades 1st - 2nd but is appropriate for any child who needs the skills listed above. (It is also great review material if your child just needs to brush up on a few of the skills listed above. You don't need to do the whole book - it is very easy to pick and choose the pages and activities you need! ) If your child needs more challenging material, please look at volume D. If you do not think your child is ready for this book, please look at volume A or B. For more fun and reinforcement, we strongly suggest that you pair this book with Phonics Centers C, shown below in the related products section.
