How to Make Greeting Cards
|
How to Make Greeting Cards is a wonderful new find from Evan Moor. This book contains reproducible patterns and kid-friendly illustrated instructions to make cards for Grandparents' Day, Thanksgiving, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Hanukkah, Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, May Day, birthdays, invitations, get-well cards, thank-you cards, and more.
These are not merely ideas for making cards - my children were able to take the book over to our copier and immediately begin making cards with the patterns in this book. The cards feature things like pop-ups, puzzles, moving pieces, and other fun, unique elements. There are multiple cards for most holidays, and almost every card lists different options. For example, one of the Valentine cards can be folded, cut out and laced together, have a drawn top, have a doily top, etc. Even my non-readers were able to make copies and put cards together by following the illustrated directions.
My children LOVE to make cards for every occasion - holidays, birthdays, get well, etc. When I put this book in their hands, they went absolutely nuts. They spent hours (honestly) over the next couple of days cranking out cards for every reason under the sun. They made several Valentine's for every member of the extended family with almost no help from me, and they had such a wonderful time presenting family members with beautiful, very creative cards.
Many of the cards even feature poems or other sentiments that non-writers can simply glue into place. These can easily be omitted to included handwritten sentiments. Most of the cards can easily be used for holidays/purposes other than the ones listed in the book. Once your child figures out how to make certain pop-ups and other elements he will be able to branch out with his own great ideas!
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Card and letter writing are two "real life" writing skills that your children will use their entire lives. Reluctant writers often find that the "bitter pill" of writing is swallowed so much more easily if they can have the pleasure of making a fun card in which to do their writing!
