This hardback book from Vision Forum is a compilation of real life missionary adventure tales that will introduce your family to men of God who stood for Christ in the face of cannibals, head hunters, savage beasts, and more. I'm reading it now and can't put it down. This is the stuff that family read alouds are made of!

The stories are arranged by continent, which would make it very easy to sneak in some geography studies. We plan to print out a map of each continent, then have the children mark each missionary on the maps. The older ones can do some narrations while the younger ones can draw pictures. The resulting missionary hero notebook is something that they can continue to add to as they read about or meet other missionaries.

I think that most of us agree the majority of the pop singers, movie stars, and sports idols that our culture holds up as "heroes" have done little or nothing that is truly heroic. However, in shielding our children from an ungodly culture, we can leave voids and vacuums which cry out to be filled. Children want heroes that they can respect - people whose lives are an inspiration pointing to God. Treasures like this book fill that need beautifully by presenting real stories of real people who were willing to lay down their lives for the Lord, and whose adventures were more thrilling than anything a bestselling author could invent.

This book is truly suitable for all ages. (My own mother keeps hinting that she wants a copy for Christmas!) You will need to read it outloud to younger children, and if your children are very young or very sensitive, you may wish to gently edit some of the head hunting and cannibal bits. Be prepared for some late nights as you and your children decide that you need to read "just one more story" time after time - this book is that good!
